Wilco, ‘A Ghost is Born’
By user • Jun 29th, 2004 • Category: Album ReviewsWhile recording the near-perfect “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot,” Wilco underwent a widely known struggle with Reprise Records and eventually was dropped from the roster, only to be resigned by a partner company. The Band fired a founding member and starred in a documentary film. The result of those two hectic years is one of the best records of the decade.
While recording “A Ghost Is Born,” the guys had a book written about them; front man Jeff Tweedy entered rehab for an addiction to painkillers; and another long-time bandmate left and was replaced by two new members.
This time around, the affects of the controversy seem to have a slightly negative affect on the music. Appearing spacey at times, Wilco indulges in the occasional jarring guitar solo and odd percussion. However, “Ghost” still upholds Tweedy’s endearing, unassuming persona and the band’s growing love for further experimentation.
All in all, Wilco may be the most resilient band in the universe.
