The Vandals

There’s something inherently juvenile about punk rock. But as the safety-pin piercings start to heal and years of home hair dyeing replaces that green/blue/orange mohawk with a thinning combover, the genre ages badly. It’s hard to pull off teenage angst during middle age, and it’s even harder to gracefully bow into a life of wives and kids while still penning lyrics straight from “Peter Pan’s Guide to Growing Up.” But when your band features arguably two of the most sought-after studio musicians in the genre, one a guitar wizard and the other a rocket-fueled drummer, it makes the transition a bit easier to stomach. As The Vandals approach 30 years of California pop-punk, the foursome has seen its members delve into successful careers as lawyers, talk-radio hosts, record executives, owners of beer-distribution companies and, of course, punk icons — all the while continuing to appeal to a constant crop of fresh 16-year-olds.
