The Streets, ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’

In a year that should see new albums from The Roots and Outkast, the most talked-about rap album could come from England.

On his sophomore release, Mike Skinner upgraded from a British novelty who stumbled by with a dialect as jarring as his accent, to a legitimate performer hell-bent on masking his shortcomings in complex layers of Nintendo beats and raw samples.

“Grand” is loosely a concept record that tracks an adventurous day from start to finish. More comfortable on the mic this time around, Skinner distances himself from his American hip-hop roots and comes across even more English, more original and more entertaining.
