The Rosenbergs, ‘Department Store Girl’

For a band that publicly shunned the interest of record industry mogul Jimmy Iovine and marketed its debut album with a buy-one-get-one-free campaign, naming this release after capitalist retail seems too ironic to overlook.
Other than the title, the quartet leaves few questions about its smooth brand of power pop. Drawing heavily from acts such as Matthew Sweet, Cheap Trick and Teenage Fanclub, the quartet relies on catchy guitar hooks and drum-on-your-steering-wheel choruses.
Much like when visiting the namesake, what you see is what you get, but if you don’t judge too harshly, you may find a gem or two.
