The Roots, ‘The Tipping Point’

By • Jul 20th, 2004 • Category: Album Reviews

Normally the role of illustrious music-school-grads-turned-mainstream-success is reserved for pretentious Brit-rockers, not people in Philadelphia.

Since 1993, The Roots’ original roster was compiled of students from the city’s Creative and Performing Arts High School. The band’s sixth studio album is surpassed only by 2002’s “Phrenology” and its 1999 masterstroke “Things Fall Apart,” which may be why this is the band’s most anticipated release to date.

Taking its experimental approach to hip-hop even further, the record is compiled of a series of recorded, free-flowing jam sessions that were then edited together during an arduous mixing/mastering process.
