The Hold Steady

Labeling The Hold Steady as “the greatest bar band on Earth” is insulting. Sure, the common title is masked as a compliment (probably even intended as one), but comparing the quintet to cover bands and weekend pub stage warriors just isn’t fair. It’s akin to saying that they are the best minor league pitcher or middle manager. And while it might be nice to be the best at those respective positions, it still carries a sentiment of not quite having made it, of being almost legitimate. With the band’s fourth LP on the way this month, it’s time to look past Craig Finn’s tales of rustbelt America and bar-room antics and take note of a group that is so much more than just a great bar band, or just a great club band, or even a great festival band. As they’ve proven time and time again, The Hold Steady is just a great band. Period.
