The Fiery Furnaces, ‘Blueberry Boat’

The liner notes of the newest David Cross disc read: “Go buy the new Fiery Furnaces album.” Although the line likely refers to 2003’s “Gallowsbird Bark,” it might as well endorse the duo’s sophomore album.
Coming less than a year after siblings Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger’s debut, “boat,” picks up the challengingly quirky texture of their first. Combining sample loops, drum machines, interesting guitar play, a slew of hit-or-miss instruments, the 12 tracks ramble through tales of slavery, would travel and love triangles.
The epic release sometimes sounds as if more than one song is playing, and the dense layers further the duo’s experimental pop approach.
