The Cure, ‘The Cure’

The DVD included with “The Cure” contains a misleading video titled “The Making of The Cure.” However, it is merely a collection of mismatched studio footage, which comes across as out-of-place.

It does star Robert Smith, though, who is always compelling. So is the story of The Cure. Regardless of how mediocre the band’s creative output, the undeniable appeal of its 45-year-old front man cross-checks any artistic doldrum.

Having released a four-disc box set earlier this year, the band was primed for only its second studio LP since 1992. “The Cure” is not as masterful as the band’s work on “Boys Don’t Cry” or “Disintegration,” but it does surpass recent works.

Smith finally appears happy to front the band he formed in 1976, proving that middle-aged men who have gained some pounds can still be cool in eyeliner and lipstick.
