Spoon

It’s rewarding to see Spoon residing near the top of the Billboard charts. Not that it’s any kind of validation for the years of watching them progress from a quaint guitar-pop band into one of Merge Records’ most consistent names on a roster made up almost entirely of fascinating acts. It’s rewarding because the Austin quartet actually seems to be getting better with each release. And since 2001’s Girls Can Tell, Britt Daniel & Co. have been doing so at an accelerated pace — taking their brand of Elvis Costello-inspired tempos one step further, their bouncy pianos a few keys bigger, and making their quirky storytelling a couple phrases more revealing. All this while at the same time not deviating too far from the Spoon formula that has become synonymous with Daniel’s songwriting and drummer/producer Jim Eno’s studio work. Their headlining set at this year’s Pitchfork Fest serves as another coronation for this hard-working band and further culmination of all those years spent toiling in indie rock obscurity.
