Shit Disco

With Klaxons recently winning The Nationwide Mercury Prize, rave revival has hit its commercial and critical stride. The problem with that, including such things as the NME Indie Rave Tour, is that the only thing these bands share with those late-’80s warehouse shows is the fan culture. Shit Disco, the Scottish quartet that solidified its buzz on that aforementioned tour, is the most recent on an ever-growing list of danceable rock acts drawing comparisons to sweaty parties two decades past. But distinguishing a band by its crowds is silly. Public Enemy wouldn’t be a jam band if patchouli-covered hacky sackers suddenly attended their gigs. And Shit Disco’s debut, Kingdom of Fear, has more in common with post punk bands despite the audience’s love of dayglo, mind-altering chemicals and all-night parties. It’s just too bad that it’s no longer en vogue to more accurately market that resurgence.
