Radio Birdman

In the mid 1970s Radio Birdman looked how The Ramones would soon look, sounded how the MC5 used to sound and acted the way the Clash acted. In short, their fashion, their sound and their no-B.S.-attitude encompassed all that was important about the decade’s new guitar rock. And they did it all arguably best, with a reserved rawness and pop sensibility that teetered flawlessly between the calculated and the coincidental. Flash-forward to the present — nearly three decades since the seminal Radios Appear— and (with a few line-up changes) the Australian fathers of garage punk are still sporting their leather jackets and sunglasses, ready to rock their fifth studio album. Sure, it reeks of nostalgia. But for a band whose legacy grew only after its prime, why not let the members hearken back to a time when they were one of the coolest bands on the planet — and get the admiration they should have gotten when they were?
