Primal Scream

primalAs a member of The Jesus and Mary Chain, drummer Bobby Gillespie split time in the early ’80s between the legendary fuzzy psychedelic noise act and his own group Primal Scream. But when forced by fellow Chain links to choose between joining the group completely and his own side project, Gillespie opted to launch Primal Scream in full and break away from the darker numbers that he had grown tired of playing. Instead, Gillespie embarked upon a quarter-century of upbeat pop songs that helped place his Scottish outfit alongside other romanticized Manchester, England, bands such as the Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Charlatans UK and New Order. In doing so, the band that once had been a way for Gillespie to blow off some Mary Chain steam turned into one of the U.K.’s most beloved pop acts. And despite a slew of lineup changes, the music of Primal Scream has remained consistently groove-friendly and optimistic, as most recently displayed on 2008’s Beautiful Future.
