Pretty Good Dance Moves

There remains a bizarre misperception that being artistically credible as well as financially stable are mutually exclusive terms. As if commercial success somehow renders all the critical acclaim moot, and performers that receive — or worse, seek out — a level of mainstream acceptance forfeit their rights to a fair trial. It’s silly. Especially today, in a time when the Internet has all but eliminated traditional marketing. Bands are forced to get more creative, spread themselves thinner, and approach the idea of self-marketing from every conceivable angle. And they have to do it while competing with more bands than ever before doing that exact same thing. So when Chicago’s Pretty Good Dance Moves entered a competition on the promotional Web site Famecast for a spot in Billboard, the effort was as calculated as it was successful. The ensemble played its minimalist electronic beats to victory in April by layering Company of Thieves’ vocalist Genevieve Schatz over stellar ambiance — a move that paid off on all levels.
