Liner Notes was a music-based talk show that aired weekly on Chicago’s public airwaves courtesy of WRRG 88.9 FM.

From June 23, 2002, to Aug. 31, 2008, Derek Wright and his batch of co-hosts discussed the music news of the world, and filled the Sunday evening slot with an equal dose of talk and rock. Jokingly dubbed a “ralk” show, the two-hour program would combine a breakdown of upcoming new releases, bizarre headlines, and a look at the looming concert schedule, with all the random tunes that had been flowing through the hosts’ headphones of late.

With a show motto of: “What you like is not as important as knowing why you like it,” the hosts often delved into lengthy – sometimes heated – discussions about the nights’ musical set list. Combining facts, trivia and (un)healthy doses of opinion, the gang often opened up the phones and e-mail for listeners to join their discussions.

Occasionally, the shows had topics, in which all the music and discussion stemmed from one theme. Ranging from concepts as broad as “British Invasion” and “Live recordings,” to narrow topics such as celebrating the 10th anniversary of Radiohead’s “OK, Computer,” these shows often brought a more in-depth approach to the broadcast.

The program also holds the unique place in history as having been part of the last interview conducted at Chicago’s famed Fireside Bowl, when Derek interviewed Josh Staples of The Velvet Teen on location during what would become the final weekend at the famed punk alley.

Some past interview guests include: Marc Arm (Mudhoney), Brendan Benson, Jeff Caudill (Gameface), Former Fat Boys, Jesse Johnson (Motion City Soundtrack), Marcus Leshock (CLTV Metromix), Yoko Ono, The Oranges Band, David Quantick (NME, Blender), Read Yellow, Robbers on High Street, Matt Sharp (ex-Weezer, ex-Rentals), Robert Smith (The Cure), Josh Staples (The Velvet Teen), Nick Stumpf (French Kicks), Troubled Hubble, The Velvet Velvet, Washington Social Club, and The Waxwings.
