Mountain Goats

The U.S. is one of only 21 countries worldwide that, according to United Nations statistics, posts a 99.9 percent literacy rate. What does that ranking have to do with avid reader/songwriter/zine editor/folk vocalist John Darnielle? Absolutely nothing. In fact, the sole Mountain Goat has as little to do with his nation’s exemplary reading habits as he does with Niger registering 14.4 percent. But it’s nice to think that the prolific storyteller has inspired a few people to crack open a novel (or maybe just a lyric booklet) while churning out albums at the rate of more than one a year for more than a decade. Its these 14 LPs and five collective EPs that have made the nomadic singer’s followers hang on his every word, eagerly flip to his every next page, and obsessively trade his bootlegs. For them, Darnielle is truly something to write home about.
