Matt Pond, PA

If Matt Pond weren’t actually from Pennsylvania, it would be easy to chalk his 5-piece up as another cluster of hipsters littering their backstory with unnecessary frills… “The band’s name is _____, but it actually is from _____. What a crazy bunch of jokesters!” (Looking in your direction on this one, Illinois). So when the songwriter uprooted himself from the Keystone State for New York City, tacking on his bygone state’s postal abbreviation should be met with a resounding shrug. And it’s a good thing that the frontman lets his sweeping melodies, Americana pop ditties and general rock feel-goodery carry the bulk of his press, and not his moniker. It’s significantly more interesting to hear tales of uplifting loves and introspective dissections on the band’s sixth LP, the new Last Light, than to dedicate a chunk of space breaking down the intricacy of a band’s name. Oh, wait…damn you Pond!
