Massive Attack

Massive Attack has never been a great live act. Sure, the band’s had great performances, but that’s bound to happen when you have four studio albums of near-perfect material. As with any performers that revel in ambiance and make their mark by creating a mood, the Bristol natives always have relied on the venue as an extra member of the group. Taking a cue from the English club scene of the late 1980s — the era in which the group honed its chops before signing its major label deal — the environment is as much a part of the experience as the music. So Chicago’s Riviera Theater — a vintage setting complete with grandiose chandeliers, a towering balcony, side boxes, intricate design details and the audience right at their feet — should be a good setting for Attack’s unique brand of sultry electro-lounge beats.
