Kinky

Since the band’s conception a decade ago, Mexico’s Kinky has been a testament to dance music’s international capabilities. In the United States, the genre is the musical equivalent to soccer. We know about it; we’re told it’s the largest in the world, but we just don’t care. And it’s certainly going to take more than Mia Hamm and a misplaced British heartthrob to demand real notice. But for those less xenophobic among us, Kinky is a perfect example of the border-defying means of heavy bass drops and cyclical loops. A rock band singing entirely in Spanish still would face a language barrier in the U.S., albeit a shrinking one. But a dance band, by the very nature of the genre, is allowed to flourish thanks to the atmospheric and universal role the music plays. And because of that, this Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, quintet speaks/sings/dances to its genre’s full international potential.
