Jeremy Enigk

If the hyper-intellectual members of the U.S. Supreme Court can’t define something as controversial as “pornography”, what chance do a bunch of record store clerks have at defining something as inconsequential as “emo?” Nevertheless, as the appointed judges of America’s highest court spend time dissecting the legal meaning of one word, bespectacled rock snobs exert the same effort in debating the origins of the most vague of music classifications. Like “alternative” and “indie” before it, the catchall term “emo” all but has lost what little definition it once had. And Jeremy Enigk — from his days fronting Sunny Day Real Estate through his contemporary solo career — often has found himself enmeshed in conversations about the genre’s forefathers. But crediting a musician with the co-creation of an indefinable movement seems a waste of effort. That energy could have been much better spent collecting the performer’s extensive and often impressive catalog.
