James Murphy

When James Murphy — half of the famed production duo DFA and the man behind LCD Soundsystem — made his mark with 2002’s true-to-life hipster spoof “Losing My Edge,” he failed to mention his ultimate trump card. He was there in 1989, and was asked to write for TV’s “Seinfeld”… but turned it down. He was either the inspiration for the too-hip-for-his-own-good snob he later mocked on that breakthrough track, or — in his own words — “was just a stupid musician smoking too much pot.” Either way, he passed on the scriptwriting gig to toil in NYC-scene obscurity for nearly 20 years. And be thankful he did. He might have saved “Seinfeld” from circular conversations about “man hands,” but he wouldn’t have ended up as the driving force behind today’s successful merging of post-punk and club sounds. Dance music can be made with live instruments, and rock ‘n’ roll can be created with DJ equipment — but the fusion of the two has rarely sounded so good.
