Eagles of Death Metal

The title of Eagles of Death Metal’s 2008 LP, Heart On, might be a subtle nod to the secret emotions that frontman Jesse Hughes harbors beneath his sleeve, despite the alpha male bravado that runs throughout the band’s testosterone-driven guitar anthems. Or it might just be a phallic pun. Either way, it’s a title befitting of the California ensemble’s third full-length. With the band’s balls-to-the-wall, stadium-ready cock rock befitting every other sexual euphemism in the lexicon, the hard-hitting outfit has built a reputation for straightforward rock anthems. The expectations of a heavy classic rock guitar sound falls squarely on Hughes and on the broad shoulders of EODM drummer/Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme. Under the moniker Carlo Von Sexron, Homme is able to dodge a bit of the spotlight that his nearly 6-foot, 6-inch frame occupies in his other band, leaving Hughes alone to soak in every bit of it for himself.
