Duran Duran

What has taken Duran Duran so long to embrace its own resurgence? If the onslaught of post-punk revival during the past few years can inspire new music from Gang of Four, and two (count ’em, TWO) Joy Division films, then the new-wave revival should have long ago found Simon Lebon and company breaking out the sequins from their glory days. But instead of crashing a Killers gig, pushing Brandon Flowers off the stage and reminding the crowd why Duran Duran is arguably the most seminal band of MTV’s early years, the band’s 2007 release, Red Carpet Massacre, sounds more on par with Justin Timberlake. By enlisting megastar, hey- look- at- and- pay- attention- to- me- and- not- the- artist- because- I’m- more- important producer Timbaland, the band’s pop heart is ripped away and replaced with a beat boxing buffoon. And while new tracks are just as danceable as club re-workings of those early-’80s songs, they lack the solid starting points that make for great remixes.
