Battles

Make sure you’ve got at least two days-worth of stubble before hitting up a Battles gig. All the chin stroking that goes on at these math-rockers’ shows often requires the perfect follicle count. A freshly-shaven face is certain to chafe sometime between songs from last year’s Mirrored and 2006’s EP C / B EP. But if you allow for too much growth, then your thumb and forefinger may be rubbed raw just about the time the band launches into its signature single, “Atlas”. This is delicate stuff, and a semi super-group featuring ex-members of Helmet, Don Caballero, and Lynx — as well as an avant garde jazz pedigree — doesn’t have time to worry about your vanity. Not only is the right amount of facial hair required for looking indifferently hip with, it’ll also help you fit in with all the others snobbishly gazing at the stage with head in hand like it’s an art museum.
