Arctic Monkeys

Suede, Oasis, Elastica…Arctic Monkeys. The brash teenagers entered the rock lexicon alongside some prestigious company. Not just any band can hold the title of having recorded Britain’s fastest-selling debut. And when 2006’s Whatever People Say I Am, That Is What I Am Not became a groundbreaking success by snatching that honor away from Elastica on the strength of Myspace buzz, the quartet positioned its smarmy dance punk as the most talked-about songs on the planet. Taking a cue from ex-fastest seller Liam Gallagher, the Arctic Monkeys make sure to remind everyone within range of their gruff banter that they deserve the hype. Not because the jagged melodies distinguish them from their peers, but rather because the members never pass up a chance to call those peers inferior. Thus the band’s sophomore album, the brand new Favorite Worst Nightmare, might go a long way towards furthering the Monkeys’ reputation as volatile braggarts. It also may become the U.K.’s fastest selling follow-up…or it may do both.
