… And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead

It’s hard to take …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead’s faux-cryptic guitar rock seriously. Maybe it’s because the trio has been known to stroll around hometown Austin in flip-flops and swimming trunks, or maybe it’s because their catalogue’s scratchy-throated anthems (“Relative Ways”, “Baudelaire”, “Caterwaul”) are vastly outnumbered by filler drivel (almost everything else). For whatever reason, the band sounds all too aware of the line between mainstream marketability and indie credibility. It’s just not clear which side of it they’re on. That wouldn’t be so damning if Trail of Dead would toe that line unapologetically. But their hesitance leaves them floundering and sounding confused somewhere in between. Somehow they continue to fool people that maybe their next tour or next release will be the time they finally cash out some of that potential — instead of just cashing in from it.
