Deerhunter

Bands in Georgia — whether it’s Athens or Atlanta — must live by one rule: if they play psychedelic pop, they cannot suck at it. Just ask the Elephant Six Collective. And since Deerhunter can call both of those cities home, the art rock ensemble was doubly tied to that motto. On the heels of the band’s second release, Cryptograms, the 5-piece has built a word-of-mouth buzz around its snarling blend of punk aggression and ’60s wall-of-sound trickery. Frontman Bradford Cox’s brooding gurgles blend, at times, perfectly into the darkly fuzzy guitars. At others, however, his soft chops lay on top of swooning melodies. The band’s appeal lies in its ability to switch between the two approaches without sounding like they’ve made a conscious choice to do so. Deerhunter’s genius is its natural sashaying between spooky and kooky, as well as between screeching and long-reaching.
