Read Yellow, ‘Radios Burn Faster’

Let’s clear this up: It’s said “Red Yellow.”

Pronunciation roadblocks aside, the Massachusetts quartet leaves little confusion about its brand of sweat-fueled rock ‘n’ roll. Equal parts MC5 and Sonic Youth, the 11 tracks on this debut LP won’t have you humming along, but it will make its way into your CD player any time you need some auditory re-energizing.

Winding guitar play between Evan Kenney and Jesse Vuona, the thumping bass lines of Michelle Kay Freivald and cannon-sounding drums of Paul Koelle are all that’s needed to accompany the band’s three-vocalist approach.

Alongside bands such as JJ72, Washington Social Club, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Breeders, Sonic Youth and The Pixies, Read Yellow proves bands with female bassists shouldn’t be trifled with.
