French Kicks, ‘Trial of the Century’

The jury finds the defendant guilty of growing by leaps and bounds on its sophomore full-length release.

“Trial Of The Century” is the band’s most soulful and ambitious release to date. After battling the press to avoid the stigma of the “New York scene,” vocalist/drummer Nick Stumpf has led his group down a path that should put a permanent divide between themselves and bands such as The Strokes, The Walkmen, The Make-Up, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and countless others from area code 212.

Stumpf’s frequent falsetto and purposefully simplistic drumming are complemented nicely by the use of 1980s-like electronics and tuneful instrumentation.

The first two tracks, “No More Time” and “Don’t Thank Me,” are its best, but don’t let that fool you — the rest won’t let you down.
