Yeah Yeah Yeahs

It’s been a while since Karen O, Nick Zinner and Brian Chase were an afterthought. Yet that’s exactly what Yeah Yeah Yeahs were to this year’s Lollapalooza. It’s not that the New York trio was simply a late edition to Saturday’s headlining slot. They weren’t on the roster at all until fellow NYC trio The Beastie Boys backed out because of a cancerous tumor recently found in Adam Yauch’s salivary gland. In fact, it could be argued that since YYYs breakout debut in 2003 (and subsequent EPs and LPs, including this year’s dance-savvy It’s Blitz), the band never has been an afterthought of any sort. It’s a role that just doesn’t suit Zinner’s blistering guitars or Chase’s workman-like beat keeping. Nor does it fit Ms. O, who has contorted her way into many conversations about the greatest living showstoppers on earth. Leave it to Lollapalooza to net an act like this on a last-minute whim.
