The Show is the Rainbow

rainbowOn the relatively short list of overweight, hairy guys who have stumbled their way into hardened hipster hearts with jarring blends of acidic beats beneath screeching jibber-jabber, Darren Keen falls a distant third. Under the name The Show Is the Rainbow, Keen’s knockoff routine of fake blood, half-nude antics, and projection screen imagery are so uncomfortably similar to fellow shocker Har Mar Superstar that even the most loyal Rainbow supporter may be wondering, “Haven’t we seen this before?” But there’s no 500-pound gorilla or multi-colored elephant in the band’s proverbial corner this time, it’s just Keen. And when he gets to a microphone, his music sounds frightfully similar to Dan Deacon’s raucous, sweaty onslaught of digital manipulation and vocal yelps. On this year’s Wet Fist, Keen again finds himself falling into the same Har Mar Deaconstar act. Good thing there’s plenty of those guys to go around.
