As !!! is quick to point out, pronouncing its name as “any sound repeated three times” gives the moniker endless possibilities and unlimited room in which to evolve. But what the Brooklyn ensemble failed to notice when giving itself such a repetitive title is that — despite all those potential variations — the name is still fundamentally redundant. Even if a fan pronounces it “Pow Pow Pow” on Monday and a journalist writes it as “Chk Chk Chk” on Tuesday, the immediate presumptions about their organic dance beats and disheveled pop structures will be that they lack innovation or that they’re dependant on duplication. Only when stepping back and viewing !!! through open eyes and not a pinhole (or by listening through its entire catalog and not just one song here or there) does the complete scope of the music parallel its interpretive and ever-changing name.
